Properties of Activated Alumina Catalyst Beads

Aluminum oxide, commonly known as alumina, has a chemical formula of Al2O3. It appears as a white powder with a density of 3.9 to 4.0 g/cm3, a melting point of 2050°C, and a boiling point of 2980°C. It is insoluble in water but slowly dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid. Aluminum oxide used as an adsorbent, catalyst, and catalyst carrier is referred to as "activated alumina." It possesses characteristics such as porosity, high dispersion, and a large specific surface area. Activated alumina is widely utilized in industries including petrochemicals, fine chemicals, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals.

 

1. Activated alumina balls have uniform particle size, excellent adsorption performance, strong moisture absorption capability, and maintain their original shape after absorbing water without swelling, cracking, or powdering. After reaching adsorption saturation, they can be regenerated by heating to remove water, allowing for multiple reuse.

 

2. Activated alumina catalyst beads are non-toxic and harmless, containing no substances harmful to humans or the environment. They meet environmental requirements and are insoluble in water, ethanol, and other organic solvents.

Applications of Activated Alumina Balls

 

1. Metal Catalyst

Activated alumina balls feature uniformly distributed micropores with large pore volume, high water absorption, low apparent density, and excellent physical and chemical stability. The Co-Mo series sulfur-resistant conversion metal catalysts prepared from activated alumina balls exhibit excellent low-temperature activity, wide application temperature range, and short rubber sulfuration time. They are suitable for medium to small-scale ammonia synthesis processes.

 

2. Absorbent

Activated alumina balls can serve as gas desiccants for industries such as textiles, electronics, petrochemicals, and instrumentation. They are also used as moisture-proof agents and air purifiers in equipment. With fast water absorption and high efficiency, they are ideal for deep drying applications.

 

3. Peroxide Regenerant

Activated alumina balls remain intact, firm, and non-powdery in water and alkali environments. They possess strong dissolution and regeneration capabilities for anthraquinone compounds, making them suitable as specialized regenerants for the anthraquinone method in the production of hydrogen peroxide.

1. Prior to use, activated alumina ceramic balls should be stored in a cool, dry area free from dust contamination to prevent dust settling on the ceramic balls and causing contamination. It's essential to prevent moisture absorption and adsorption of other substances from the air, which may affect their performance.
 
 
2. Activated alumina ceramic products have a certain degree of brittleness. During usage, rapid temperature changes should be avoided to prevent the rupture of alumina spheres.
 
 
3. During usage, contact between tar-like viscous substances and activated alumina should be avoided to prevent clogging of the pores in activated alumina, which may affect its effectiveness.
 
 
4. After being put into use, activated alumina ceramic balls should be inspected regularly each year, surface impurities should be cleaned off promptly, and defective balls should be replaced.
 
 
5. When used as a catalyst, before replacing or adding new catalyst, it's necessary to clean and inspect the reactor for any remaining catalyst or waste materials.
